Portugal to host World Cup semi-final

Fernando Gomes maintained however that the candidacy undertaken by Portugal with Spain and Morocco still needs a “positive evaluation”.

Fernando Gomes was speaking during the conference ‘2030 World Football Championship: anatomy of a Candidacy’, held by the Faculty of Law of the Catholic University of Lisbon.

The director reiterated that the final of the competition cannot be played in Portugal given the requirement for stadiums with a capacity of more than 80 thousand spectators, but that it is planned to host one of the semi-finals.

“Portugal will have a semi-final together with the country that does not host the final”, said Fernando Gomes, adding that FIFA requires the venue to have at least 60 thousand seats.

Among the three stadiums that will host the competition (Estadio da Luz and Estádio José Alvalade, both in Lisbon and Estádio do Dragão, in Porto), only Benfica’s venue exceeds this capacity.
